Work & Edition Details
The texts of the two motets belong to the Easter and Pentecost liturgy of the Christian churches and therefore find their place in the church year. They can be performed in church services and sacred concerts. The formal structure of both multi-movement works is similar: they begin with a version of the Latin sequences Victimae pascali laudes and Veni Sancte Spiritus, both composed around the year 1000, which is reminiscent of medieval movement structure. They are followed by a movement in which the Easter or Pentecost Gospel is composed in motet style and dramatic tonal language. The hymn of the Pentecost motet praises the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit in alternating solos by soprano and tenor and in a double-choir setting. Both motets close with a festive German chorale in tune, whose stylistic devices refer to J. S. Bach's chorale movements.
