"In the summer of 1996 - I was busy working on my third symphony - I received a call asking me if I might be interested in composing a concerto for bass tuba. A young tuba player who had won first prize in a German music competition would like to premiere such a work. I first had to make friends with the idea of writing a solo concerto; I had not yet written a piece in this genre, although I am otherwise unafraid of classical genres. The solo concerto, however, presented itself to me as a genre particularly constricted and burdened by compositional and musical sociological tradition: The juxtaposition of an individual, who impresses his audience more athletically than artistically through virtuoso handling of his instrument, with a collective of musicians called an 'orchestra', a piece of the '19th century' - despite and precisely because of the magnificent repertoire of masterpieces for which this role description and assignment is by no means applicable.
