Work & Edition Details
a large scale choral setting of poems from "The Earthly Paradise" , written by William Morris in the late 1860s. The epic range of the 24 included "tales" recount 24 stories, some familiar some obscure from Greek myths. This symphony is based on 4 extracts. The first is not from the book itself, but of the period of its composition. The love triangle portrayed in "The Doomed Ship" is a nightmare voyage in which two men, once friends, are torn apart by their love for a woman. Jane Burden, whom Morris married in 1859, appears in the poem as "the bride"... "O Dwellers on the lovely Earth" is a "herdsman's song" counselling love of nature instead of prayers: "Take heed of how the daisies grow"... The longest setting is "The Hill of Venus", familiar from the German legend of Tannhauser, another battle of desire versus conscience. Finally, "Iceland First Seen" describes Morris's initial glimpse of the island he considered "the Holy Land", because of his lovel of the Icelandic Sagas. The work was written for all the resources of a large chorus and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. but has many traditional features of classical music practice.
