Sinfonietta for Orchestra

In 1987, the composer received a working scholarship at the Künstlerhof Schreyan with the requirement to write a composition for amateur orchestra. This resulted in the present Sinfonietta. The composer's aim was to create a work with a large orchestra whose degree of difficulty could be mastered by amateurs, but whose musical demands could at the same time be seen as a kind of introduction to the great symphonic repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries. The work is more demanding rhythmically and harmonically. The wind instruments are often used as soloists. Consideration was given to the conditions of an average amateur orchestra in that, although a full wind section and percussion are required, important reductions in the instrumentation were made: In the woodwind section, no secondary instruments such as cor anglais or similar are provided, divisi parts have been dispensed with altogether for violas and double bass, and the harp and 3rd and 4th horn parts, which have been common since the 19th century, are also missing.
