Work & Edition Details
The reason for the chamber orchestra arrangement was the idea of integrating a contemporary accent into a programme of baroque Advent and Christmas music. The orchestration is largely oriented towards the instruments already present in such a programme. The rather sombre character of the work refers to the fact that Advent falls during the dark season and is a time of preparation and fasting. The major brightening at the end may be seen in the context of the song line from the 4th stanza "die Nacht gibt ein neu Licht dar". It opens a window on the festive Christmas music that may follow in the programme, characterised by the joy of the child in the manger.
