Work & Edition Details
As in the preceding oratorio "Für Deine Ehre habe ich gekämpft, gelitten - Stationen der Passion Jesu" (2000), the music for the Creation Oratorio is based on the concept of the multi-movement symphony. One could think of the model of the symphonic cantata, of which there are numerous examples (e.g. Mendelssohn Bartholdy: 2nd Symphony "Lobgesang", Mahler: 2nd and 8th Symphonies, Shostakovich: 13th and 14th Symphonies). A sonata allegro preceded by a slow introduction and an aggressive, grim "Scherzo" form the first section. The second section opens with an expressive slow movement, followed by a short a cappella movement that assumes the dual function of an independent intermezzo as well as a slow introduction to the multifaceted final movement.
