Work & Edition Details
The indication "in E and A" evokes a stylistic and compositional definition of place, through which it should become clear that the work belongs neither to the dominant dodecaphonic tonal language of the time nor to the chromatic system of Hindemith's provenance arranged around a central tone. Rather, a tonal balance between two fundamental tones is striven for, in which the double meaning of the fifth relationship - E : A = T : S, but also D : T - i.e. the predominant functional relationship of classical-romantic music, itself becomes the harmonic reference element and centre point; in such a way that a materially unambiguous tonic expands into a 'spiritually' ambiguous relationship - representing, as it were, the gravitational field of a double star, also comparable to a Calderian mobile which, although it reckons with the undispensable force of gravity, brings it into balance and levitation by means of scales.
