Work & Edition Details
I wanted to write a sextet for woodwinds. I had motivic material for it, some of which I had already "stored away" and arranged according to its structural relationship. I did not have a prior plan for the course of the form and its coherence. It came about when the individual motif complexes, sent into chronological order, combined into consistency and development. In this way of composing, new material emerges that builds bridges, that, varying and contrasting, consolidates or opens up the form and thus requires a greater range of stylistic idioms and sound realisations. Thus the sextet became an octet and finally a chamber symphony. (With the Italianate title, the work is meant to escape the pretension and pathos associated with "symphony").
