Work & Edition Details
The chorale sonata "Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren" (to EG 289, after Psalm 103) is based on one of the longest melodies in the Evangelisches Gesangbuch. The melody, transposed to A flat major, forms the first theme of a sonata form. However, it does not reach its end at first, but breaks off abruptly both in the exposition and in the recapitulation, replaced by a contrasting second theme. Thus it is left to the coda to let the chorale sound in its complete form, first in A major, then in the main key of A flat major, interspersed with elements of the second theme.
