Work & Edition Details
The sonata for solo violin begins calmly and lyrically with a melodic line divided into three sections of four bars each, the ambitus of which spans three octaves. The beginning is characterised by long note durations and a sequence of mostly alternating downward and upward intervals that grow larger and smaller again like a fan. However, the movement gains more energy from the secondary theme, which is clearly more agitated and incorporates a sequence-like treatment of motives. As the movement progresses, the music rises to Allegro and ff, then breaks off abruptly and finally recalls the material of the beginning of the movement in fragments in the Poco Adagio of the opening.
