Work & Edition Details
The single-movement Adagio contains - formally speaking - features of the rondo and sonata form. In the exposition and recapitulation, the side idea (m. 18), initially presented by the organ, is more of a mere episode, framed by the main theme, in keeping with the rondo form. In the sonata-like development, however, this side idea triggers the dramatic development, supplemented by new material. For the rehearsal, care should be taken to ensure great breath and inner calm. A sonorous piano, softly blown, should dominate. In the rhythmically profiled and difficult parts, however, attention should be paid to a very precise blowing technique.
